Fast-Casual vs. Traditional Quick-Service 2009

SKU REPORTS-FASTCASUAL

Fast-casual chains have raised the bar for traditional quick-service restaurants over the past 5-plus years and many of the major players in traditional quick-service have responded by improving their food and beverage offerings and facilities. Sandelman & Associates understands you’d like to know how fast-casual stacks up against traditional QSR in the eyes of your customers. So we developed the Fast-Casual vs. Traditional Quick-Service 2009 trend report.

Who patronizes fast casuals? How much do they spend? What size parties dine at fast casuals? How do they compare on last purchase occasion measures? How do fast-casual and quick-service restaurants compare on overall ratings and a battery of customer satisfaction attribute ratings? If you have questions like these, Fast-Casual vs. Traditional Quick-Service 2009 provides answers.

This report is culled from the responses of nearly 200,000 fast-food users across 38 markets in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Find out who comes out on top -- fast-casuals or QSRs -- on kid appeal, taste, convenience and value. Sure, prices are higher at fast-casuals, but can better food ratings translate to better perceived value?

Findings for 19 selected fast-casual chains are aggregated in this report. These include three burger chains (Steak ‘n Shake, Backyard Burgers, Culver’s), four chicken chains (Boston Market, Zaxby’s, El Pollo Loco, Pollo Tropical) four Mexican concepts (Chipotle, Baja Fresh, Taco Cabana, Rubio’s), four sandwich/bakery café chains (Quiznos, Panera Bread, Schlotzsky’s, Firehouse Subs) and four miscellaneous concepts (Fazoli’s, Captain D’s, Panda Express and Yoshinoya).

The report provides data on last purchase occasion, overall rating of the most recent occasion, attribute ratings in the aggregate and demographic profiles. Comparisons are made between fast-casual and traditional QSR with trend.

Last purchase occasion measures include main meal item eaten, daypart, service mode, party size, amount spent, use of promotion and sources of promotion awareness.
